What you should understand first
- Provider: supplies the network service and subscription URL.
- Client: imports profiles, selects nodes and applies routing rules.
- Core: processes the traffic according to the client configuration.
- Rules: decide whether traffic is proxied, direct or sent to another policy group.
Typical setup flow
- Install the client from the developer's official source.
- Copy your subscription URL from your service provider.
- Add the profile or subscription to the client.
- Update the profile and confirm nodes or proxy groups appear.
- Choose a node or policy group.
- Start with a simple rule mode, then test access.
- Only after the basic connection works, adjust TUN, DNS or advanced rules.
Clash and Mihomo are not the same thing
A client is the interface you use. A core is the component that actually handles proxy protocols and traffic processing. Different clients can bundle or invoke different core versions, so a configuration feature shown in one client may not exist in another.
Choosing a client
Choose a client based on your operating system, desired level of control, supported configuration formats and how much you want to customize rules. For first-time users, prioritize clear profile management and straightforward system-proxy controls.
