How to Test Whether a VPN or Proxy Connection Works

Use layered tests for IP, DNS, latency and target-site access.

Layer 1: local network

Verify basic access works without the proxy.

Layer 2: endpoint

Check whether the client reports a successful connection and reasonable latency.

Layer 3: public IP

Confirm the public exit IP changes as expected.

Layer 4: DNS

Check the DNS resolution path.

Layer 5: target service

Test the websites or applications you actually need, not only a speed test.

Keep it reproducible

Change one network setting at a time and test after each change.
